I just got home from your movie Nov 5 in Cobourg Ontario. My high expectations were more than satisfied. This movie will be an all-time movie memory for me now. I’ve paddled the Yukon in summer and hope to go back, this time I will carry your family’s tremendous and inspiring adventure with me as I gaze into the forest. What a great film to remind us what really matters and how we can reconnect to mother earth and appreciate her splendor, adapt to our natural environment, being present in all that we do and most importantly being present with our children. Your documentary was appreciated not only by myself but also my teenage daughter, Kristen who especially enjoyed you and your family’s presence after we saw your documentary in Durban on the 26th of July. I saw this video art piece with my wife last night at the Wakefield International Film Festival, and I want to thank Suzanne and Kate for attending to answer questions, and share their experiences with the audience. This film envelops the viewer with its sincerity, and challenges one’s perspective on family relationships, and our undeniable and intimate interconnection with nature. One of my favourite quotes by Mariam Beard reads, “Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” – this film bespeaks that notion by taking the viewer not only on a trip into the bush, but on an emotional, humorous and everlasting journey. Thank you Suzanne and family for making this film and hope to visit you all in Dawson City some time!

At the VIFF screening I attended one woman prefaced her question to the now familiar family standing on the stage by saying that she felt like an undeveloped human being. A remarkable insight and response to this glimpse of what is possible when we re-unite with the natural world and flow of life around us. What many of us have suspected is true: if we remove ourselves from the constraints of time and our gadgets, we give space for life to unfold with its inherent creativity and sense of wonder. This film was born from that space and so depicts it naturally and very beautifully. Truly delightful.

If you want a crash course in what a parent can do to create a solid relationship with their children, see this film. It answers, in so many quiet and gentle ways, what is important to a child. I laughed a lot, and cried a bit too, at the intimacy, at the honesty, at the insights provided by this remarkable documentary that gives equal voice to parents and kids about their 9 months in the bush. Not everyone can do this what this family did, but everyone can learn and be inspired by what they share about their experience. Congratulations Suzanne. And thank you!

I loved that film at the VIFFest yesterday! So many others need to see it too! It reminded me of my people – First Nations who have lived that way for 1,000 of years but with more relatives and no money to go buy supplies! I heard on Friday some communities only got running water last year and was reminded that some First Nations communities don’t have any roads or need for phones etc. I am reminded of others who go to the “bush” every year to live off the land as a regular occurrence without any fan fair or even the slightest recognition!
Thank you to your family for bringing this to light and love of the yesteryears and all that we have had! Yours was a beautiful story, so happy you had the foresight to tape it for all the world to see!

I spent several years in the Yukon bush as a child and this film, with it’s intimacy, helped me gain a perspective on my own experience that I don’t think I would have had otherwise. This film seems to touch everyone who sees it. Humorous, sensitive, thought provoking, inspiring… brilliantly done!

What a beautiful piece of art! Your documentary found me today when I was searching for something worth watching. Well, I obviously found it! I live in Europe, Hungary and I’ve been always amazed by the beauty of your country. The striking message of your movie makes me think about my own life and how I grew up yerning for the kind of intimacy, closeness and honest relationship with my own parents. It also makes me think about that I’m living very much the same way they did and not how I dreamed people should live. I thank you for reminding me for the beauty and importance of being in the moment! Beautifully done!
